Once properly installed, the device locks onto the rope when weighted with a rotating stainless steel cam. Unlocking is accomplished by unweighting the GRIGRI, or by pulling the self-retracting handle, which unlocks the cam. With the cam held open by the handle, the user can rappel, stopping the descent when necessary by releasing the handle.
